2011 EPIP National Conference

We want to hear from you! 

What a week it has been! Many of us attended the 10th Anniversary EPIP National Conference in Philadelphia to represent Bay Area philanthropy and if you haven't heard, it was a very engaging, thought-provoking and inspiring week of events, workshops, speakers and connections.

We want to hear how it had an impact on you, your organization, your chapter or your career path.  What are some key highlights, takeaways, favorite moments or lessons learned that you would like to share with the rest of the Bay Area Chapter and philanthropy community? Please add your comments to this post. 

Here are highlights from EPIP Bay Area Chapter steering committee members:

The EPIP conference was absolutely transformative. The speakers were inspiring and impressive and the four program tracks; Understanding Philanthropy, Social Impact, Managing Power Dynamics and Generations in Philanthropy, were delivered with deep reflection and compassion for the hard work that is being undertaken by those in the sector. Conference participants were encouraged to share their thoughts on an array of topics from systems change to movement building, and were encouraged to think deeply about our own true purpose as well as the broader philanthropic mission and purpose. The conference also stressed the importance of multisector partnerships to ensure that the philanthropic community is utilizing all of the resources available to promote meaningful change. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be able to participate and I look forward to combating and confronting some of the challenges that lie ahead.

The EPIP National Conference was fantastic. The energy in the sessions was palpable, and it was a unique experience to connect with young leaders around the country who are committed to solving today’s social problems. I was particularly excited to connect with Foundation CEOs on the topics of leadership and vision for the field through plenaries and small leadership salons. I hope the Bay Area chapter can capture the same enthusiasm and energy in our work this year!

Rajasvini Bhansali, IDEX Executive Director

Rajasvini, known as Vini, is passionate about building the capacity of people and organizations to facilitate sustainable social change, and has worked in Kenya, India, United States and Canada. Before joining IDEX, Vini worked as Chief Operating Officer for a nationally renowned social enterprise and youth development organization. A native of India, Vini earned a Master’s in Public Affairs (MPA) with a focus on technology and telecommunications policy from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin and Bachelor’s degrees in Astrophysics and Interdisciplinary Studies from UC Berkeley. Vini serves on the board of CUSO-VSO, an international volunteering organization and is the co-founder of a social enterprise that supports youth vocational training in East Africa, Sukuma for Opportunities. Vini was appointed to the role of Executive Director as of February 2010.

EPIPers Kick-off the New Year at Casanova Lounge

EPIPers from all over the Bay Area gathered at Casanova Lounge in San Francisco's Mission District for a happy hour on January 27, 2011 to kick-off the new year. Approximately 30 EPIP members and non-members congregated for drinks and some delicious mediterranean food (thank you Truly Mediterranean!) to meet other philanthropy and development professionals in the Bay Area and learn about the 2011 EPIP program calendar.


EPIP Steering Committee Co-Chairs Dion Ward and Pauline White Meussen welcomed the crowd and highlighted some of the exciting upcoming events for the year. Most notably, they encouraged members and non-members alike to participate in the 2011 EPIP National Conference taking place April 7-9, 2011 in Philadelphia. Dion and Pauline also underscored the benefits of EPIP membership, including networking, professional development and opportunities for leadership within the chapter.


Revelers got to know each other by playing "Human Bingo," a game where each person gathers signatures on a modified bingo board in which each square has a different statement about personal experiences. Players connected over common interests and backgrounds throughout the night. Human Bingo culminated in a raffle of completed bingo boards where three very lucky attendants each won the book Working Across Generations by Frances Kunreuther, Helen Kim and Robby Rodriguez, as well as some very handy EPIP notebooks and pens.


The New Year celebration launched all the great programs to come for EPIP in 2011. Stay tuned to the EPIP blog for the next great event!
